ASTM SB-653 is identical with ASTM B653, except that some additional requirements shall apply. It is the standard specification for seamless and welded zirconium and zirconium alloy butt welding fittings. It covers 45° & 90° elbows, 180° returns(bends), caps, tees, reducers, lap-joint stub ends and other fittings. There are three grades available: R60702 (PZ2) – unalloyed zirconium, R60704 (PZ4) – zirconium-tin alloy, R60705 (PZ5) – zirconium-niobium alloy.

The zirconium butt welding fittings, either seamless or welded, may be made from pipes, tubes, plates, bars or forgings. The manufacturing processes include hammering, pressing, piercing, extruding, upsetting, rolling, bending, fusion welding, machining, or a combination of these operations. The fittings shall be manufactured in accordance with ASME B16.9 or MSS SP-43, and ASME B36.19. Injurious external and internal imperfections of a nature shall be avoided. The standard specification also covers referenced documents, terminology, ordering information, welding process, chemical composition, tensile requirements, hydrostatic test, inspection, certification, referee, product marking, packaging, surface inspection, radiographic inspections of welds, and stress-relief heat treatment.
